What is Chiropractic ?

Chiropractic is a healthcare field that focuses on the diagnosis and treatnent of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system. It is based on the scientific fact that your body is self-regulating and self-healing organism. It utilises this in inherent healing power of the body to maintain body structure and function without the use of drugs or surgery.

The main technique chiropractors work with includes hands-on, manual therapy techniques. This might include manipulation of spine, joint or other soft tissues. Though the most common reason that individuals seek out chiropractor care is to address lower back pain issues, chiropractors also regularly diagnose and treat a wide variety of muscle, tendon and joint issues, including athletic injuries.

Chiropractic Examination & Treatments

  • Palpate your spine, the muscles and other soft tissues that support it

  • Conduct orthopaedic examinations includes moving the joint and measuring its range of movement

  • Conduct neurological examinations to assess the function of your motor, sensory and cranial nerves      (eg. Testing your reflexes and testing for numbness)

Where required, your chiropractor can also refer you directly for other diagnostic tests such as an X-Ray or MRI.

Based on the examinations, your chiropractor will give you:

  • Differential diagnosis which considers all of the potential causes of your primary complaint

  • Working diagnosis (The most likely cause of your primary complaint)

They will explain this diagnosis, including its natural history, the treatment options available to you and any benefits or risks associated with those treatments.

Common chiropractic treatments includes a range of different techniques, such as:

  • Spinal manipulation/adjustment

  • Mobilisation

  • Drop piece table tachnique

  • Application of heat or ice

  • Stretching

  • Soft tissue techniques

  • Exercise recommandation

  • Lifestyle advice, such as healthy eating and physical activity advice

  • Treatment of other joints including feet, ankles, shoulders, wrists and elbows
